General Mattis: The Warrior Monk Goes to White House

He is nicknamed "The Warrior Monk" because of his bachelorhood and lifelong devotion to the study. He is noted for his interest in the study of military history and world history,[29][30] with a personal library that once included over 7,000 volumes and a penchant for publishing required reading lists for Marines under his command.

"He is known for the intellectual rigor he instills in his Marines, risk management, and requiring his Marines to be well-read in the culture and history of regions where they are deployed. (...) It was as a regimental commander he earned his nickname and call sign, "CHAOS", an acronym for "Colonel Has Another Outstanding Solution"...”

Mattis não será o primeiro general a ocupar a Casa Branca, bem longe disso. Como alguém já escreveu: “He will not be a General-President. No more than Generals Washington, Jackson, Harrison, Taylor, Pierce, Johnson, Grant, Haye, Garfield, Arthur, and Eisenhower were. A few of those Presidents had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the White House too. There is precedent for drafting a President: Draft Eisenhower movement. He will be a consul summoned to preserve and restore a faltering but yet-viable State.”

  1. O que Mattis não admitiu a Trump

“You know what? It’s yours”, President Trump said of Syria. “I’m leaving.”

A call between President Trump and Turkey's leader pushed Defense Secretary Mattis to quit and sent shock waves through Washington:
“You know what? It’s yours”, President Trump said of Syria. “I’m leaving.” The call, shorthanded in more or less the same words by several administration officials, set off events that, even by the whirlwind standards of Washington in the Trump years, have been cataclysmic.
