Mudanças na CIA

China, technology, economic security and climate...

THE CIA IS MAKING SOME CHANGES -- In a statement out today, CIA Director Bill Burns says he is sharpening the agency's focus on China and future threats as part of a structural reorganization. You might remember the director ordered several strategic reviews this past spring that were aimed at making sure the agency was adapting to today's complicated threat environment.

In a press release this morning, the director said that one of the resulting changes is to establish a China Mission Center (CMC). (We know - one would have thought the Agency already had a CMC, right?) Director Burns was careful to say that the agency is forming this new group to tackle what he calls "the most important geopolitical threat we face in the 21st century", and that the threat is coming from the Chinese government, not the Chinese people.

The agency is also hiring a Chief Technology Officer and is establishing a Transnational and Technology Mission Center. We're told that the aim there is to address the global issues - like technology, economic security and climate - that are critical to US competitiveness.

In case you're wondering, the director also emphasized that the agency will "continue to focus sharply on other important threats, including an aggressive Russia, a provocative North Korea and a hostile Iran, as well as combatting terrorism."
