COVID-19 Is Being Called “Wuhan Virus” and “Chinese Coronavirus” For Two Very Big Reasons

Here is why, in politics and law, sometimes names matter…

Just because the World Health Organization (WHO) officially named the novel coronavirus “COVID-19” doesn’t mean it’s not going to be referred to as the “Wuhan Virus,” the “Chinese Coronavirus,” or other names that stamp the origin of the virus into the public lexicon.

One reason for what some observers see as politically incorrect name-calling is, in fact, pure politics.

The President of the United States, some members of his Administration, and other politicians are stamping “Made in China” all over the virus because identifying China as the virus’s place of origin stigmatizes China geopolitically, with the intention of undermining China’s increasing global influence.

Another reason the world’s going to be hearing more about the Wuhan or Chinese Virus is lawsuits are being filed blaming China for accidental or deliberate gross economic destruction.

A $20 trillion class-action lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas alleges the COVID-19 virus is a biological weapon designed by China. And, by releasing it, China violated U.S. law, international laws, treaties, and norms and caused massive economic damage to U.S. individuals and businesses.

Here is why, in politics and law, sometimes names matter…

Origin Story

In 2015, the WHO issued new guidelines for naming new infectious diseases in humans. According to the WHO, they are meant to “minimize unnecessary negative effects on nations, economies and people,” and should consist of generic terms that describe the disease’s symptoms, or, if the pathogen that causes the disease is known, it should be part of the disease name.

On February 11, 2020, the WHO officially named the recently identified novel coronavirus “COVID-19.” CO stands for corona, VI for virus, D for disease, and 19 for 2019, the year it was discovered.

What the WHO did not do was sound a global alarm when Chinese health officials alerted them on December 31, 2019, that patients in Wuhan, a city of 11 million in the Hubei province, were exhibiting unusual, pneumonia-like symptoms.

Perhaps the WHO wasn’t aware or didn’t demand more information from Chinese health officials who already knew what has subsequently been revealed.

According to official reports, on December 10, 2019, a 57-year-old man who worked at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, the wet market (a wet market, as opposed to a market for dry goods, is a public marketplace where produce, fish, meat, and live animals are sold and slaughtered), started feeling ill, was admitted on December 16, 2019, to Wuhan Central Hospital with a “flu-like infection” in both lungs and was treated with anti-flu drugs which the virus proved resistant to.

What the WHO may not have known, which the world knows now thanks to a report accessed by the South China Morning Post and corroborated by The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, AXIOS, and other sources, is that a 55-year old man, later confirmed having coronavirus, likely contracted it on or around November 17, 2019. He started exhibiting symptoms on December 1, 2019, had not been to the wet market, and though he is considered the earliest traceable patient, Chinese officials say there was no epidemiological link between his case and later cases.

The WHO may not have known that a 51-year-old doctor in Dongguan, an industrial city in China’s Pearl River Delta, was hospitalized on December 2, 2019; the first known hospitalization caused by the “pneumonia with unknown etiology.” He was diagnosed with a lung infection, severe pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and allergic purpura. Not surprisingly, according to subsequent Chinese reports, no epidemiological link could be found between his case and later cases.

As patients presented symptoms at Wuhan area hospitals, between December 18 and 29, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) was collected and used for viral genome sequencing. During that period, members of the Wuhan Institute of Virology published a report on seven cases of people with severe pneumonia who were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Wuhan Jin Yin-Tan Hospital. Their samples were sent to the laboratory at the Wuhan Institute of Virology for the diagnosis of the causative pathogen. Patient ICU-01 was not proven to be linked to the Wuhan Seafood Market, but the other six were either sellers or deliverymen at the market.

Meanwhile, on December 24, 2019, doctors from Central Hospital of Wuhan took fluid samples from the lungs of a 65-year-old deliveryman who worked at the Wuhan Seafood Market and sent them to Vision Medicals in Guangzhou for testing. Visual Medicals is a Chinese infectious-disease startup, founded in May 2018, and focuses on precision medicine for infectious diseases, including respiratory and bloodstream infections. They developed a CRISPR-based rapid diagnostics platform for pathogen detection and said it sequenced most of the virus from fluid samples on December 27. The results showed an alarming similarity to the deadly SARS coronavirus between 2002 and 2003.

After receiving the test results, multiple doctors in Wuhan shared the information via the internet, including Li Wenliang, an ophthalmologist at Wuhan Central Hospital, who posted a warning to alumni from his medical school class, via a WeChat group, that a cluster of seven patients within the ophthalmology department had been unsuccessfully treated for symptoms of viral pneumonia and diagnosed with SARS.

In the WeChat post, Li posted that the hospital had confirmed cases of SARS and posted a snippet of an RNA analysis finding “SARS coronavirus” and extensive bacteria colonies in a patient’s airways.

Li, called in for questioning and detained by authorities, contracted the coronavirus from a patient he treated, was hospitalized on January 12, 2020, and died on February 7, 2020.

News of an outbreak of “pneumonia of unknown origin” started circulating on social media on the evening of December 30, 2019. The social media reports stated that 27 patients in Wuhan – most of them stallholders at the Huanan Seafood Market – had been treated for the mystery illness.

During the following two days, December 28 and 29, 2019, Hubei Provincial Hospital received three similar cases, all associated with the Seafood Market. On December 29, hospital administrators convened a multi-departmental panel of doctors who concluded the cases were unusual and required special attention. They reported their findings to the provincial CCDC, Chinese Centers for Disease Control, not affiliated with the U.S. CDC.

Wuhan CDC staff initiated a field investigation and found additional patients with similar symptoms who were linked to the market. According to a CCDC publication, the initial admissions to Hubei Provincial Hospital occurred on December 29.

On December 30, 2019, an “urgent notice on the treatment of pneumonia of unknown cause” was issued by the Wuhan Municipal Health Committee on its Weibo social media account. The post said there had been “a successive series of patients with unexplained pneumonia recently” – 27 suspected cases in total, seven of which were in critical condition and 18 were stable. Two of those were on the verge of being discharged.

On December 31, 2019, the Wuhan Municipal Health Committee reported to the WHO that 27 people had been diagnosed with “pneumonia of unknown cause.”

The Wuhan Municipal Health Commission also made a public announcement regarding the outbreak.

On January 5, 2020, Professor Zhang Yongzhen and his team at the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Centre announced they had mapped the world’s first genome sequence of the deadly novel coronavirus.

The Shanghai Centre reported its discovery to the National Health Commission on the same day and recommended “relevant prevention and control measures” be taken in public places because the patient from whom the sample was collected had suffered very severe symptoms and the virus resembled a group previously found in bats.

China’s National Health Commission announced hours after the release by Zhang’s team that it would share the genome sequence with the WHO. It later emerged that the information had been sent through the officially designated Wuhan Institute of Virology.

At the time, the public was told that no new cases had been reported in Wuhan since January 3 and there was no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission.

According to the South China Morning Post, Professor Zhang’s team “made their finding public on January 11 after it saw that the authorities had taken no obvious action to warn the public about the coronavirus.” The Centre shared its genome data on virological.org, an open platform for discussions, and GenBank, an open-access data repository, and said researchers were welcome to download, share, use, and analyze the data.

A day after Shanghai Public Health Clinical Centre published the world’s first genome of the virus, it was ordered to close for “rectification.” It closed the following day.

The findings by Zhang’s team were published in the scientific journal Nature on February 3. The research said the virus sample was collected from a patient who showed symptoms of fever, dizziness, and coughing and was admitted to a Wuhan hospital on December 26.

Subsequently, researchers led by Dr. Wang Jianwei at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Institute of Pathogen Biology, used next-generation sequencing (NGS) to definitively identify the pathogen causing illness in Wuhan. They focused on five patients admitted to Jin Yin-tan Hospital in Wuhan, most of whom were workers in the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan.

The researchers constructed the whole genomic sequence of the new virus and found that its genome sequence is 79% similar to the SARS-CoV, about 51.8% similar to the MERS-CoV, and about 87.6% to 87.7% similar to other SARS-like CoVs from Chinese horseshoe bats (called ZC45 and ZXC21).

Understandably, the late Dr. Li Wenliang misdiagnosed the novel coronavirus as SARS, given the remarkably close RNA structure COVID-19 has to it.

The WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020.

Seeking Political and Legal High Ground

Since the virus is almost indisputably from somewhere in China, probably the Wuhan wet market or maybe the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and Chinese health officials, authorities, and politicians, more than likely all the way up to the President Xi Jinping, knew about the exploding epidemic and covered it up for as long as they could, they’ve put themselves and the country in the line of fire politically and legally.

Politically, the Chinese are vulnerable on all fronts.

Domestically, as more Chinese question what the government knew and didn’t tell them, the ruling party will be disparaged and possibly challenged if further pain is inflicted on the Chinese population.

Internationally, China faces mounting criticism that will only grow exponentially louder once the crisis passes and health concerns are superseded by political and economic concerns.

Legally, the $20 trillion class-action lawsuit filed in Texas was only the first such suit. Already, another suit has been filed in a Federal Court in Florida and lawsuits are also being filed in other countries – most recently in India, who reportedly filed this past Saturday, April 4, to the United Nations Human Rights Council.

So, get used to COVID-19 being called the “Wuhan Virus” or “Chinese Coronavirus” because those names have a political and legal ring to them.

Vírus de Wuhan Já Mudou o Mundo e Vai Mudar Tudo Ainda Muito Mais

A "normalidade" que conhecíamos morreu vítima do vírus chinês.A narrativa neo-liberal sobre a morte do Estado, está agora à vista de todos, era claramente exagerada. Acabou a era das "governanças", os governos estão de volta, com um completo refazer do modelo económico global.



Tempo de "re": relocalizar, reindustrializar, reestruturar, refazer e até renacionalizar... China, Estados Unidos e Rússia já tornaram claro que a sua escolha (e, recordem-se, governar é escolher...), a sua prioridade é defender e desenvolver os respectivos aparelhos produtivos. Até a ordo-liberal Alemanha da CDU/CSU encara mesmo a nacionalização de empresas para impedir que, feridas pela crise, sejam vítimas dos grandes predadores estrangeiros, como os chineses.

A implosão/fragmentação do modelo global deixa a actual estrutura da economia chinesa sem racionalidade. O governo do PC Chinês já deixou cair a prevista taxa de crescimento dos 6% (o mínimo para suportar a "normalidade" da economia chinesa), cortou-a para metade, num primeiro tempo, e já encara uma taxa de... 0,2% ! Resta saber se mesmo estes 0,2% terão alguma realidade... 

Na "União Europeia", alguns dos Estados da fachada marítima (incluindo a Itália) não descartam a possibilidade de taxas de desemprego da ordem dos 40% (fruto de um colapso das respectivas economias e do tempo necessário para refazer os aparelhos produtivos). Muito interessante (e até instrutivo...) será ver como a Alemanha e a sua "zona marco" ou "zona n.euro" reagem à quebra da China e ao afundar de boa parte da Europa...

Não isenta de problemas mas muito menos exposta está a economia americana que tem no seu mercado interno o principal cliente (ao contrário das economias da Alemanha ou da China que, subordinadas a estratégias de nacional-mercantilismo, vivem das exportações...). O governo de Washington já decidiu tomar as medidas necessárias para que os bens e serviços disponíveis no seu mercado interno tenham uma forte incorporação de trabalho americano. E isto implica o refazer das cadeias logísticas globais... Ou seja, é uma péssima notícia para a Alemanha e para a China.

O vírus de Wuhan fez desabar o mundo que conhecíamos, foi o fim de um mundo. O que está a emergir, por entre violentíssimas dores de parto, é ainda uma novidade. Preparem-se.

If the novel (new) coronavirus, COVID-19, isn’t nearly as contagious as influenza viruses are, why did China shut down Wuhan, a huge manufacturing city, and quarantine 46 million people?

What don’t we know about the virus?

What are world governments really frightened about?

This report answers those questions.

The Origin of the Virus

At this point in the brief history of the new coronavirus, designated COVID-19 by the WHO, all scientists seem to agree that the virus originated in Wuhan, Hubei province, China, based on where the first recognized infections were diagnosed.

Researchers haven’t been able to definitively determine the origin of the new virus.

Or have they?

COVID-19 appears, for the most part, as a zoonotic coronavirus, which is a virus that’s transmuted from infecting animals to infecting humans.

The SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) betacoronavirus, which emerged in Guangdong province, China in 2002, is a zoonotic coronavirus that originated in bats, which likely infected civet cats, and transmuted to infect humans.

Based on its genomic structure, COVID-19, also a betacoronavirus, a single-stranded RNA virus of zoonotic origin, comes from bats.

However, scientists discovered disturbing anomalies in the long strand of the new virus’s RNA.

Dr. Yuhong Dong, who holds a doctorate in infectious diseases from Beijing University wrote in the Epoch Times, “based on recently published scientific papers, this new coronavirus has unprecedented virologic features that suggest genetic engineering may have been involved in its creation.” He added, “The virus presents with severe clinical features; thus, it poses a huge threat to humans.”

Studying the virus’ phylogenetic tree, its full genome sequence, Dr. James Lyons-Weiler, founder and CEO of the Institute for Pure and Applied Knowledge, IPAK, identified a long unique sequence of 1,378 nucleotide base pairs not found in other coronaviruses. According to Dr. Lyons-Weiler, the “novel sequence” lacks homology (similarity due to shared ancestry between a pair of structures, or genes) between similar bat coronaviruses. He says the inserted sequences should not be there.

Dr. Lyons-Weiler points to the presence of a SARS-binding protein sequence in the new coronavirus that allows it to easily infect human cells.

He explains, “Despite considerable genetics distance between the Wuhan CoV and the human-infecting SARS-CoV, and the overall low homology of the Wuhan CoV S-protein to that of SARS-CoV, the Wuhan CoV S-protein had several patches of sequences in the receptor binding (RBD) domain with a high homology to that of SARS-CoV. The residues at positions 442, 472, 479, 487, and 491 in SARS-CoV S-protein were reported to be at receptor complex interface and considered critical for cross-species and human-to-human transmission of SARS-CoV. So, to our surprise, despite replacing four out of five important interface amino acid residues, the Wuhan CoV S-protein was found to have a significant binding affinity to human ACE2. The Wuhan CoV S-protein and SARS-CoV S-protein shared an almost identical 3-D structure in the RBD domain, thus maintaining similar van der Waals and electrostatic properties in the interaction interface. Thus the Wuhan CoV is still able to pose a significant public health risk for human transmission via the S protein-ACE2 binding pathway.”

Dr. Yuhong Dong of Beijing University asks, “How could this novel virus be so intelligent as to mutate precisely at selected sites while preserving its binding affinity to the human ACE2 receptor? How did the virus change just four amino acids of the S-protein? Did the virus know how to use Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) to make sure this would happen?”

A study by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin also found the novel coronavirus and SARS share the same functional host-cell receptor, called angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). They warn, “The deadly new coronavirus is up to 20 times more likely to bind to human cell receptors and cause infection than severe acute respiratory syndrome.”

The report, published on the website bioRxiv, said the new coronavirus “had around 10 to 20-fold higher affinity – the degree to which a substance tends to combine with another – for human ACE2 compared with SARS.” The researchers added that further studies were needed to explore the human host-cell receptor’s role in helping the new virus to spread from person to person.

One theory surrounding the novel coronavirus’s extraordinary ability to bind to host receptors is that it was engineered to do just that.

Chinese scientists have been working on a SARS vaccine. It’s possible they engineered the RNA of their vaccine to make it more receptive to humans.

The engineered “binding” sequence is similar to the pShuttle-Sn recombination vector abs INS1378 patented by the Chinese, using it to develop an immunogenic vaccine against SARS.

According to the patent filing (translated from Chinese), The present invention belongs gp120to the field of genetic engineering, particularly relates to adenoviral vector SARS vaccines, their preparation and coronavirus S genes in SARS (SARS) on vaccines for the prophylaxis. By means of biological engineering, the coronavirus S gene in combination with deficient recombinant adenovirus, the protective immunogen protein or polypeptide expressed therein, through expansion culture, purification, and formulation to prepare a mucosal immunogenicity can cause the gene vaccine, respiratory mucosal immune response induced by the body to produce antibodies against the virus infection. Specific conditions of the present invention, compared with conventional inactivated virus particle vaccine, safe, easy to use, without limitation intramuscular, have broad clinical applications.”

If the new coronavirus is an experimental SARS vaccine that escaped a research lab, the Chinese should tell the world.

But, that’s not the whole story.

An HIV Connection?

On Jan. 27, 2020, researchers Prashant Pradhan, Ashutosh Kumar Pandey, Akhilesh Mishra, Parul Gupta, Praveen Kumar Tripathi, Manoj Balakrishnan Menon, James Gomes, Perumal Vivekanandan, and Professor Bishwajit Kundu, from the Indian Institute of Technology, published a paper on bioRxiv.org (pronounced “bio-archive”). It’s a free online archive and distribution service for unpublished preprints in the life sciences, operated by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a not-for-profit research and educational institution, titled, “Uncanny similarity of unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120 and Gag.”

The authors say they found four insertions in the spike glycoprotein (S) which are unique to the 2019-nCoV and are not present in other coronaviruses.

“Importantly, amino acid residues in all 4 inserts have identity or similarity to those of HIV-1 gp120 or HIV-1 Gag,” the team reported. They wrote, “Interestingly, despite the inserts being discontinuous on the primary amino acid sequence, 3D-modelling of the 2019-nCoV suggests that they converge to constitute the receptor binding site. The finding of 4 unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV, all of which have identity/similarity to amino acid residues in key structural proteins of HIV-1 is unlikely to be fortuitous in nature.”

Pradhan added, “To our surprise, these sequence insertions were not only absent in S-protein of SARS but were also not observed in any other member of the Coronaviridae family. This is startling as it is quite unlikely for a virus to have acquired such unique insertions naturally in a short duration of time.”

The paper states, “Unexpectedly, all the insertions got aligned with Human immunodeficiency Virus-1 (HIV-1). Further analysis revealed that aligned sequences of HIV-1 with 2019-nCoV were derived from surface glycoprotein gp120 (amino acid sequence positions: 404-409, 462-467, 136-150) and from Gag protein (366-384 amino acid). Gag protein of HIV is involved in host membrane binding, packaging of the virus and for the formation of virus-like particles. Gp120 plays a crucial role in recognizing the host cell by binding to the primary receptor CD4. This binding induces structural rearrangements in GP120, creating a high-affinity binding site for a chemokine co-receptor like CXCR4 and/or CCR5.”

It is well known that CD4 cells are essential to human immunity and are the direct targets of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV. HIV attaches to CD4 cells, enters, and infects them. The virus then turns each infected CD4 cell into a factory creating more HIV virus until eventually all CD4 cells are destroyed.

Other researchers chimed in reporting, “If we take a closer look at the 4 insertions of the S-protein. . . they are all located on the binding surface of the protein, seemly designed to be able to bind to target cell receptor sites. Natural accidental mutation would be randomly distributed across the whole length of the S-protein. It is highly unlikely that all of these insertions would coincidentally be manifested on the binding site of the S-protein.”

The article by Pradhan et. al., a preprint made available through bioRxiv has not to-date been peer-reviewed and has been “withdrawn.”

According to bioRxiv, “This paper has been withdrawn by its authors. They intend to revise it in response to comments received from the research community on their technical approach and their interpretation of the results. If you have any questions, please contact the corresponding author.”

bioRxiv’s website says, by posting preprints on bioRxiv “authors are able to make their findings immediately available to the scientific community and receive feedback on draft articles that are not peer-reviewed, edited, or typeset before being posted online. However, all articles undergo a basic screening process for offensive and/or non-scientific content and for material that might pose a health or biosecurity risk and are checked for plagiarism. No endorsement of an article’s methods, assumptions, conclusions, or scientific quality by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is implied by its appearance in bioRxiv. An article may be posted prior to, or concurrently with, submission to a journal but should not be posted if it has already been accepted for publication by a journal.”

If the new coronavirus has an HIV-like mutation its ability to bind with human cells could be up to 1,000 times as strong as the SARS virus, according to scientists in China and Europe.

When looking at the genome sequence of the new coronavirus, Professor Ruan Jishou of Nankai University in Tianjin found a section of mutated genes that did not exist in Sars but were similar to those found in HIV and Ebola.

“This finding suggests that 2019-nCoV [the new coronavirus] may be significantly different from the Sars coronavirus in the infection pathway,” the scientists said in a paper published on Chinaxiv.org, a platform used by the Chinese Academy of Sciences to release scientific research papers before they have been peer-reviewed.

“This virus may use the packing mechanisms of other viruses such as HIV.”

According to the study, “The mutation can generate a structure known as a cleavage site in the new coronavirus’ spike protein. The virus uses the outreaching spike protein to hook on to the host cell, but normally this protein is inactive. The cleavage site structure’s job is to trick the human furin protein, so it will cut and activate the spike protein and cause a “direct fusion” of the viral and cellular membranes.”

Compared to the SARS’ way of entry, this binding method is “100 to 1,000 times” as efficient, according to the study.

In a follow-up study, a research team led by Professor Li Hua from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, Hubei province, confirmed Ruan’s findings.

“The mutation could not be found in Sars, Mers or Bat-CoVRaTG13, a bat coronavirus that was considered the original source of the new coronavirus with 96 percent similarity in genes,” it said.

This could be “the reason why SARS-CoV-2 is more infectious than other coronaviruses”, Li wrote in a paper released on Chinarxiv.

“Compared with SARS-CoV, 2019-nCoV appears to be more readily transmitted from human to human,” the report of the study said. “The high affinity of 2019-nCoV S for human ACE2 may contribute to the apparent ease with which 2019-nCoV can spread from human to human.”

A good reason to panic.

Like almost everything related to COVID-19, we don’ know for sure what the origin of the virus is, if the virus was engineered as a SARS vaccine, or if it was engineered with HIV elements.

We do know, however, doctors are using Kaletra – the brand name for a combination of ritonavir and lopinavir, two antiretroviral medications used to fight HIV – to fight COVID-19.

We also know that this novel coronavirus isn’t supposed to be as dangerous as the flu, but it’s got governments around the world trying not to panic their citizenry.

Maybe they should.

Whatever governments know, they should tell us. And, based on the extreme measures taken in China, now Italy, and elsewhere, they know a lot more than they’re letting on.

Obviously, governments don’t want to create panic. But, maybe they should.

If COVID-19 is a far greater threat to the human race than we’re being told, because it is an out-of-control engineered vaccine or a bioweapon, maybe controlled panic, which is already evident, is justified and maybe what’s necessary to get global governments, scientists, doctors, and the public working together, immediately, to eradicate this potentially existential threat to humanity.

Dr. Yuhong Dong, from Beijing University, says, “It is imperative for scientists, physicians, and people all over the world, including governments and public health authorities, to make every effort to investigate this mysterious and suspicious virus in order to elucidate its origin and to protect the ultimate future of the human race.”

In uno splendido volume dal titolo “Il libro nero della Cina” curato da Reporter senza frontiere e pubblicato nel 2004 vengono chiaramente illustrate le modalità repressive e censorie che furono attuate dalla Cina durante l’epidemia della Sars; modalità che dovrebbero indurre sia i giornalisti occidentali che gli analisti a diffidare profondamente della credibilità delle informazioni che la Cina ha fornito fino a questo momento in relazione alla diffusione della epidemia del Coronavirus.

Nel febbraio del 2003 le epidemie della Sars si diffusero sia in Cina che a Hong Kong e il Dipartimento della propaganda della provincia di Guangdong da dove era partita la Sars fece di tutto per ostacolare e censurare ogni informazione relativa a questa tematica.

I giornali nazionali furono intimati di non diffondere notizie sull’espansione della malattia e alla fine di febbraio il portavoce del Dipartimento provinciale della sanità annunciò che da quel momento in poi il Dipartimento della propaganda si incaricava di fornire le informazioni necessarie su questa tematica ai media locali.

Tuttavia, nelle settimane che seguirono, la ripresa del controllo da parte del Dipartimento della propaganda impedì ai periodici locali e nazionali di ricevere informazioni credibili e affidabili sul numero esatto dei malati.

In modo particolare nel mese di marzo il governo centrale vietò ai giornalisti di occuparsi dell’epidemia che stava provocando il panico sia a Honk Kong che nel mondo intero.

Infatti, per diverse settimane, i media furono costretti al silenzio da parte del governo e la popolazione venne mantenuta nell’ignoranza più totale.

Solo un mese dopo i primi allarmi si conteranno in Cina 1445 casi di Sars e 65 decessi. Le critiche che furono rivolte dalla comunità internazionale furono molto dure: il governo cinese aveva volontariamente dissimulato l’avanzata dell’epidemia.

Di fronte a queste critiche, nell’aprile del 2003 il Dipartimento di propaganda insieme al Partito comunista cinese organizzò una campagna mediatica nazionale sulla Sars. Infatti la televisione nazionale diffuse a 360° le raccomandazioni destinate a limitare la diffusione del virus tanto che i giornali cinesi consacreranno le loro prime pagine proprio alla Sars.

I giornalisti furono invitati a visitare gli ospedali della capitale per osservare l’impegno profuso dalle autorità nella lotta contro l’epidemia e quasi quotidianamente vennero organizzate delle conferenze stampa dal governo cinese.

Tuttavia, temendo che la stampa cinese potesse rivelare informazioni non controllate, il Dipartimento di propaganda tenne sotto stretto controllo determinate riviste fra le quali Cina Newsweek.

Con lo scopo di fermare una possibile deriva da parte della stampa considerata troppo liberale nella provincia di Guangdong verrà nominato un nuovo segretario generale del partito e cioè Zhang Dejiang che in breve tempo sarà in grado di riprendere il controllo della stampa locale.

Nel giro di pochi mesi numerosi direttori di giornali locali furono sostituiti dai dirigenti nominati dal Dipartimento della propaganda la maggior parte dei quali sprovvisti di qualsiasi competenza giornalistica.

Dal mese di aprile al mese di giugno gran parte delle redazioni furono costrette a seguire la campagna nazionale di lotta organizzata dal Partito e dal Dipartimento di propaganda come dimostrano gli annunci trionfali da parte del “Il quotidiano della gioventù a Pechino” e “Il mattino di Pechino” che definiranno una grande vittoria dello spirito nazionale la sconfitta della Sars.

Como Este Vírus Chinês Muda Tudo


A China, voluntariamente ou não, desencadeou um jogo de que ainda ignoramos quem será o vencedor mas de que já sabemos o resultado final: a mudança radical do tabuleiro actual.

Depois do "chinavirus", "coronavirus", "covis 19" ou qualquer ouro nome que lhe queiram chamar e quer Pequim consiga ou não impedir a OMS de o considerar "pandemia", depois desta peste gerada no coração da "globalização" nada ficará como dantes e o mundo será outro.

Se a "peste negra" chegou à Europa pelas velhas rotas da seda (e liquidou mais de metade da sua população de então...), este último "chinavirus" nem precisou de que o projecto das novas rotas da seda estivesse terminado para atacar em todos os continentes, disruptar circuitos económicos e cadeias logísticas globais e tornar num inferno a vida das sociedades desenvolvidas do Ocidente.

Anunciado por Pequim no final de 2019 (há quem demonstre que já grassava na China desde Janeiro 2019 e só a denúncia temerária de 8 médicos do hospital de Wuhan deixou o governo chinês sem margem para continuar a ocultá-lo...), o "coronavírus" pode ser visto como o "presente" de Ano Novo que a China ofereceu ao mundo, que o aproveita para desencadear uma reestruturação total.

Marx deliciar-se-ia a analisar o suicidário modelo de "desenvolvimento" da China: as formas como mobiliza o seu infindável "exército industrial de reserva" para garantir as vantagens competitivas de dumpings sociais, as formas como se relaciona com o seu quadro físico para garantir as vantagens competitivas de dumpings ambientais, as formas de relacionamento tributário que impõe aos estados mais fracos para consolidar o seu estatuto de super-potência, enfim, toda a parafernália do seu "modo de produção asiático"  (como diria o velho Karl Heinrich) sempre enroupada no 'pronto a vestir' do reaccionário confucianismo.

Quem não viu despontar no horizonte este 'cisne negro' que ao menos tente agora antecipar as suas próximas (e também as mais longínquas) consequências. Porque elas vão ser pesadas e imensas. O jogo já mudou, o novo tabuleiro e as novas regras estão a compor-se.

O Caso do Hacker Bizarro

A segurança e defesa de um estado tem hoje a sua primeira linha nessa recente realidade a que se chama ciberespaço. Território de fronteira, o ciberespaço é frequentado por toda a espécie de aventureiros (uns bons e outros maus, uns de 'chapéu' black, outros de white e até alguns de grey...). 

As regras e normas nesse espaço são as dos filmes do John Wayne ou do Clint e os "rangers" são a única emanação do Estado que aí tem capacidade de funcionar. Admitir outro cenário é puro angelismo ou simples ignorância.

Desde que um senhor que fazia de presidente da república veio, muito solenemente, à televisão comunicar ao país que ignorava quem andava a ler os seus e-mails (numa altura em que estados ocidentais já interditavam a presença de telemóveis nos conselhos de ministros...), desde aí até agora, Portugal pouco avançou neste domínio. Ou seja, não avançou o necessário.

Não tem "rangers" para intervir e conduzir operações (de defesa ou de ataque) no ciberespaço e nem sequer sabe distinguir os chapéus dos aventureiros que por lá circulam e, portanto, confunde frequentemente (ou só acerta por acaso) amigos potenciais com inimigos reais e vice-versa...

"Oh, pateta, chapéus há muitos"

Talvez não fosse pior começar a pensar a sério no assunto e, obviamente, assumir uma acção em consequência... E com alguma urgência. Seria melhor do que andar a estampar nos jornais e televisões ciberassaltos (bem sucedidos) a ministérios, à PJ, à PGR e tutti quanti que (lamentavelmente ou mesmo "criminosamente") estão de portas escancaradas.

E acabar (criminalizando mesmo, se necessário) com comportamentos patéticos mas muito gravosos para o interesse nacional como o do magistrado que, recentemente, se vangloriava de nunca ter tido password nem códigos de acesso no seu computador profissional e no seu telemóvel profissional. Dêem-lhes formação e responsabilizem-nos!

Figuras lamentáveis como a do tal senhor que fazia de PR e não sabia quem lia os seus e-mails têm de ser abolidas. Exterminadas! A segurança e defesa do País, do seu território, dos seus "operadores de importância vital" e dos seus cidadãos é uma função primordial do Estado. É mesmo a principal razão de ser do Estado e aquela em que assenta o pacto que o fundamenta e o justifica.

De tão angélicos que andamos nem nos lembramos de que certo 'black hat', precipitadamente elevado a estrela mediática, nem sequer tem tempo de actividade que justifique todos os "trabalhos" e resultados de que reivindica a autoria... Talvez também não seja pior considerar também esse aspecto da questão.

Tal como conviria considerar que não terá sido essa criatura mediática (admitindo que foi mesmo ele) o primeiro a penetrar nos "sancta santorum" do Estado Português e suas adjacências. Hackers ao serviço de estados estrangeiros há anos e anos que o terão feito... Que terão vasculhado departamentos e recolhido elementos que lhes chegam para reconstituir a vida de cada português através dos ficheiros de Saúde, Justiça, Finanças, bancos, telecomunicações, etc... Tanto a vida de qualquer um de nós, simples cidadãos, como a da senhora PGR, do "super-juiz" ou do Presidente da República.

Last but not least, é bom não esquecer que o Direito tem sempre uma guerra de atraso e, neste caso da actual "information warfare" (tanto de 'continentes' como de 'conteúdos'), tem também uma era tecnológica de atraso.

Felizmente, há hackers (white hat e grey hat)! Como dizia o outro "Oh, pateta, chapéus há muitos."

Paris: O regresso da Esquerda e da Direita


Entre as duas, Paris hesita... Entrega-se à espanhola ou à marroquina?

As duas são morenas. Sim, há uma loira, de última hora, mas essa não conta. É entre a marroquina e a espanhola que este campeonato autárquico se vai decidir. A espanhola já lá está há anos, é a incumbente, a marroquina é uma endiabrada, um inesgotável poço de energia e prega ideias claras, é a challenger.

Uma é de esquerda e, claro, a outra é de direita. Assumidas e alinhadas. E esta é a primeira derrota de Macron, ainda antes dos votos. Ele que tinha convencido a opinião publicada de que, com ele, vinha um “mundo novo” onde “esquerda” e “direita” deixavam de fazer sentido porque eram ultrapassadas pelo seu “mundo novo”...

Afinal, a realidade não é tão volúvel como a opinião publicada e não se deixa convencer por um qualquer aprendiz de feiticeiro. Ou até mesmo por um grande feiticeiro que, obviamente, nunca se meteria em tal alhada.

Anne Hidalgo, uma socialista há anos à frente da câmara de Paris, apoiada por uma espécie de geringonça à francesa, apresenta um balanço polémico a que a classe média torce o nariz (o “Paris popular” há muito que emigrou para a periferia).

Essa classe média quer segurança, limpeza e respeito pela autoridade. Tudo coisas que a socialista, mais preocupada com a criação de obstáculos ao uso do automóvel para diminuir a poluição, não é capaz de lhe oferecer.

Mas segurança, limpeza e respeito pela autoridade é precisamente o que Rachida Dati, a marroquina que foi ministra de Sarkozy e deputada no Parlamento Europeu prega por todas as ruas, praças e mercados de Paris.

Acrescentando-lhe ainda “limites claros à emigração”. Também aqui a marroquina está nos antípodas da espanhola que defende uma “cidade inclusiva” e quer que Paris se abra mais à emigração.

A loira que não conta é a candidata de Macron que saiu de ministra da Saúde para se candidatar à câmara depois da desistência do candidato inicial apanhado numa estória pornográfica a enviar vídeos dos seus actos masturbatórios à companheira de um artista russo exilado em Paris que, para denunciar a hipocrisia desse auto-proclamado “homem de família”, os publicou na internet... A “esquerda” (verde, vermelha e cor de rosa) acabará por apoiar, numa segunda volta, a espanhola. A direita, incluindo Marine Le Pen, apoiará, nessa segunda volta, a marroquina de Sarkozy. E, terceira derrota de Macron (a segunda é ter a sua loira atirada para fora de jogo, logo a primeira volta), Rachida Dati arrecadará os votos da maioria dos “macronistas” parisienses.

A 15 de Março é a primeira parte do jogo. Se nenhum candidato obtiver então maioria absoluta, uma semana mais tarde é a segunda volta. Até lá, até ao “lavar das urnas”, vai continuar a vindima dos votos entre a espanhola e a marroquina. Entre as duas, Paris hesita. Por enquanto.

Apple, Nike, Gap, Sony e Outras Beneficiam de Trabalho Escravo na China

More than 80,000 Uighurs have been forced to work in factories for global brands in China, including Apple, Nike, Gap and Sony, according to a new report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. Conditions “strongly suggest forced labour” in factories “far away” from their homes, the report said. The new evidence comes just a week after the United Nations demanded “unfettered access” to Xinjiang.
